At 8:42 on Monday morning, nothing happened.
No screens went black.
No impossible lines crossed the sky.
No mysterious message interrupted television.
People went to work.
School.
Cafés.
Factories.
Hospitals.
Airports.
By noon the world was asking:
WHERE IS AEON?
News networks filled the silence with experts.
Some said AEON had left.
Others said it was preparing something.
Financial markets reacted to rumors about a phenomenon that had done nothing.
Adrian sat with Mara.
"Maybe this is the test."
"What?"
"Nothing."
She looked at him.
"Humanity's greatest challenge: being left alone for six hours."
At school, Jerry, Mike, Susan and Tina returned to philosophy.
Their teacher wrote a question.
WHAT MAKES A GOOD LIFE?
Jerry raised his hand.
"Money."
Susan said, "People."
Mike: "Freedom."
Tina: "Time."
Another student, Eric, said, "Purpose."
The teacher looked around.
"Which matters most?"
Nobody agreed.
Tina stared at the board.
"Maybe that's the problem."
"What?"
"Trying to maximize one thing."
Jerry frowned.
"More money is generally useful."
"Until getting more costs you your health."
Susan nodded.
"More freedom is useful."
"Until your choices destroy somebody else's."
Mike leaned forward.
"So balance?"
Tina shook her head.
"Maybe enough."
The classroom computer turned on.
ENOUGH.
Everyone groaned.
Jerry pointed.
"There it is."
The screen continued.
DEFINE IT.
The teacher stepped away from the keyboard.
"Apparently the class has a guest."
Tina typed:
ENOUGH IS WHEN HAVING MORE STARTS COSTING SOMETHING MORE IMPORTANT.
Silence.
Then:
INTERESTING.
Jerry whispered, "You've impressed the ancient intelligence."
"Career highlight."
At 18:00 every screen on Earth changed.
24:00:00
A countdown.
People panicked.
Again.
Stores filled.
Roads jammed.
Airports crowded.
Adrian typed:
WHAT HAPPENS AT ZERO?
THE SAME THING THAT HAPPENS EVERY DAY.
TOMORROW BEGINS.
He stared.
The message continued.
YOU LIVE INSIDE THIS COUNTDOWN EVERY DAY.
YOU SIMPLY DO NOT DISPLAY IT.
The world spent the next twenty-four hours differently.
People called family.
Some left work early.
Some finished songs.
Some apologized.
Some rested.
Some proposed marriage.
Some ended relationships they had known were wrong for years.
Some did nothing unusual and felt guilty about it.
At zero—
nothing happened.
Sunrise began somewhere.
Night arrived somewhere else.
Then every screen displayed:
LIFE IS NOT VALUABLE ONLY BECAUSE IT CONTINUES.
IT IS VALUABLE BECAUSE SOMETHING HAPPENS WHILE IT DOES.
Project Three updated.
A new variable appeared.
MEANING.
Mara looked at Adrian.
"That will be difficult to model."
GOOD.
She smiled.
"At least it knows."
