CHAPTER 04

Elevate Yourself to Elevate Your World

Adrian did not sleep.

Project Three had changed the question.

Until then, he had imagined improvement as design.

Better systems.

Less friction.

Smarter technology.

But consequences were different.

You couldn't improve a world only by making its machines more convenient.

People operated the machines.

People created institutions.

People made decisions.

People carried habits from one system into another.

By morning Adrian had filled an entire wall.

At the center:

ELEVATE YOURSELF TO ELEVATE YOUR WORLD

Mara entered carrying coffee.

She read it.

"That sounds dangerously like something printed above a yoga studio."

Adrian looked at her.

"Give it a minute."

"I'll try."

He pointed toward the wall.

"We keep designing systems as if the individual doesn't matter."

"Individuals matter too much. That's usually the security problem."

"No. I mean we expect technology to fix behavior without changing the behavior."

Mara placed the coffee down.

"Go on."

"A cleaner city doesn't begin with autonomous cleaning machines."

"It helps."

"Yes. But if everybody keeps throwing garbage into the street, we've just built expensive machines to compensate for bad behavior."

"True."

"A peaceful world doesn't begin with better weapons."

Mara looked at him.

"Definitely yoga studio."

Adrian ignored her.

"Health systems can't compensate forever for environments that make people unhealthy. Education can't work if nobody wants to learn. Freedom can't survive if nobody accepts responsibility."

Mara became serious.

"So your grand theory is that people need to improve."

"No."

"What then?"

"That improvement moves in both directions."

He drew two arrows.

INDIVIDUAL → WORLD

WORLD → INDIVIDUAL

"Better environments help people become better. Better people create better environments."

"A feedback loop."

"Exactly."

The monitor activated.

Neither reacted anymore.

That worried Mara more than when they had been frightened by it.

Text appeared.

ELEVATION IS NOT SUPERIORITY.

Adrian read it.

Another line.

IT IS INCREASED CAPACITY WITHOUT INCREASED DESTRUCTION.

Mara stepped closer.

"That's better than your definition."

"Thanks."

A STRONGER HUMAN WHO DESTROYS MORE IS NOT ELEVATED.

A RICHER SOCIETY THAT DESTROYS ITS CONDITIONS FOR EXISTENCE IS NOT ELEVATED.

A MORE ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY THAT REDUCES LIFE IS NOT ADVANCED.

Adrian stared.

Then:

ELEVATION REQUIRES CONSEQUENCE.

"Awareness of consequence," Adrian said.

YES.

Mara looked at him.

"It's teaching us."

Adrian shook his head.

"Or correcting us."

The distinction made neither of them comfortable.
